Yachting Australia Issues Safety Notice Calling for Propeller Guards

Yachting Australia, a national sports organization for Sailing, issued a Safety Information Notice on the Risk of Propeller Strikes 26 August 2013.

Yachting Australia is a federation of 8 state and territory yachting associations that represent a total of nearly 400 affiliated sailing clubs and about 60,000 members.

DiscoverSailing.org.au and Australian Sailing are also under the Yachting Australia umbrella organization.

The recent Safety Notice is a continuation of many steps being taken in Australia to improve boat propeller safety.

Per the statement, Yachting Australia recommends “The use of propeller guards for outboard engines at training centres and clubs where there is dinghy and windsurfing training.”

The Safety Notice closes with,

Yachting Australia recommends all sailing clubs and training centres, which own and use vessels powered by outboard motors to rescue people or capsized boats, to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment and review of the need for propeller guards as part of the risk mitigation.

It was sent to every sailing club in Australia.

  1. Safe Marine Ltd is a small company in New Zealand manufacturing PropGuards from a marine grade aluminium and keen to promote PropGuards and the use of them on small recreational Craft. We have been doing this since 1996 and I am surprised that there are still so many people using an outboard motor without a guard on it – especially when children are involved.
